Executive Chef & La Vegan Rendez -Vous Owner
Banchi, born and raised in Ethiopia, has been cooking Ethiopian food ever since she was a little child. She followed in her mom’s footsteps and developed a passion for cooking Ethiopian food. After moving to North America, she worked in the restaurant industry for years, including Sheraton hotel, Hilton Hotels, and various Ethiopian cuisine restaurants in the USA. Working in those amazing kitchens gave her the experience she needed in customer service. Also, working for those big companies helped her with food training, and she attended food-related courses to expand her learning.
Following that, she moved to Canada to open her own business in 2001. Rendez-Vous Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant has been a flagship restaurant for those over 18 years on the Danforth. She looks at Rendez-Vous as her child, as she spends most of her busy day cooking and serving her customers. Her happiest moments are seeing her customer satisfaction with the food together with the transcendent service she provides.
After working so much of her life in the industry, she feels blessed to share her passion for Ethiopian cuisine in Toronto. Her restaurant is one of the oldest Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants on the east side of Toronto. All her experience has allowed her to feel like an ambassador when it comes to introducing Ethiopian culture and cuisine in the city. She feels blessed to have educated so many diners thus far.
Rendezvous is known for its coffee, as Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee. We have ceremonies that celebrate that! You’re able to witness fresh coffee being roasted right at your table and served with a side of freshly popped popcorn! The Toronto city that she loves is such a vibrant and multicultural city. She has a great feeling to be part of it. Since opening Rendzevu in 2001, she’s now in the era of serving her second generation of diners. The children she once fed are now grown and enjoy her food on their own. This is a heart-warming time for her, and she looks forward to future generations to come.
